2008...time to bet

Alright, we're what, 17 months away? It's time to pick a candidate. Mr. Winthorpe, the standard prize will apply...a bottle of Pappy's 30 year goes to the winner, paid for by the other 2.

Before stating your picks, we need some ground rules. Rather than picking a straight up winner, we should give credit for picking both GOP and Dem nominees. No prohibition on picking the same winner of the general election. Tiebreaker will be margin of victory with electoral votes....Prices Right rules apply.

Let's say 10 pts each for party nominees, and 20 pts for picking the winner. 5 point bonuses for picking their running mates.

Along with picking the winners, compare those with the candidate you'd LIKE to see win, but probably won't (i.e. Ron Paul).

Put your picks down in the form of a new post, rather than a comment attached to this one.

I'm in if Strap is in. What's the deadline for the predictions? The reason I ask, is that there are some serious candidates who may yet declare their candidacies (Mike Bloomberg, Chuck Hagel, Fred Thompson, Al Gore, etc.).

Also, you may want to consider inviting Mister Clean into the pool...

I forgot to mention: There is no Pappy's 30 year-old bourbon. Only a 23 year-old and a 20 year-old. I suggest the 20 year-old, since it is usually available.

invite Mr. Clean...bottom line, only one winner. each loser's payment, liquor of the winner's choice. mine is 23-year Pappy's. Cost limit should be that.

You've got 17 months to find that 23-year Pappy.

deadline for picks is 1 July...you can throw in a non-candidate with the hope he'll declare.

with 4 participants, winner should get 3 bottles...sound fair?

Here are some point values, open to suggestions. Tried to weight the point values to give bonuses on picking the full ticket. Additionally, I think the party VP noms may be harder than the Pres nom...there's a wider pool of potentials, although smart money's on a failed Presidential candidate:

Winning Ticket -- 50 pts
President -- 25 pts
VP -- 15 pts
Party Ticket -- 25 pts
Party Pres Nom -- 10 pts
Party VP Nom -- 10 pts

Independents are a bit tricky. How can we assign point values there, especially when any number can run? I personally hope that Paul becomes the LP candidate. He could help give that party some legitimacy.

What do you mean by "winning ticket?" So if I guess the right president but not the right VP do I still get the 50 points? Are you saying that I get 50 points for guessing R, D, or I for winning the White House?

I think 3 bottles is a little steep--though I'll go along with that if everyone else does.

winning ticket means you pick both the winning pres and VP. giving a little bonus if you can pick the whole thing...a pretty impressive feat at 16 months out.

same with picking the party ticket...you've picked both the party's pres nominee and his/her running mate.

open to suggestions on the rules.

losers could chip in on 1 bottle, but due to our geographic situation...may just be easier for each of us to pay up. did you invite Mr. Clean?

I think Mr. Clean would have some good inputs to scoring. So there is still a little ambiguity in your scoring. So if you pick the Pres and VP correctly, you get 90 points?

And if you pick the party Pres and VP nom, you get 45 points?

I think that sounds reasonable. I'll let Mike Goldwater and Mr. Clean chime in.

i see...you either get the "full ticket" points, or just the Pres or VP votes. you can't earn the full 90...you can earn either 25, 15 or 50.

The intent is: winning ticket > VP + Pres....SYNERGY!!!

basically a 10pt bonus for picking 'em both.
